SANTA FE, NM. Martine Bertin-Peterson, president of ARTsmart, a 50lc3 organization, announced the recipients of ARTsmart’s 2012 scholarships. “This is the sixth year ARTsmart has awarded the Art Changes Lives scholarship to a Santa Fe senior who will be pursuing the fine arts in college,” Bertin-Peterson said. “Diego Suarez, a student New Mexico School for the Arts, displayed an outstanding portfolio of paintings, drawings and photography that impressed the judges. His letters of recommendation commended his artistic and academic achievements and his personal integrity.” The amount of this year’s scholarship award is $5,000.

Suarez (whose untitled work is shown at the left) has been accepted at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA. “Education and art exist as dual entities to me that are as precious and valuable as water in a barren desert. I’ve grown up surrounded by family members that haven’t made it past high school,” he has written. Included in his resume are numerous awards and volunteering for Santa Fe Young Curators and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.

A second Art Changes Lives Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 was awarded to Wesley Carr, who received his high school degree from The MASTERS Program, Santa Fe. Carr has been accepted at Alfred University, Alfred, NY. “What defines me is a fascination with how objects work, and this drive to make and create.” He has interned at the New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop, Prairie Dog Glass, and exhibited his work at The William & Joseph Gallery and Santa Fe Community College.

ARTsmart’s Envisioning the Future $500 stipend for books and materials was awarded to Sienna Fleming, a senior at New Mexico School for the Arts. A photographer with an interest in advertising design, Sienna will be attending The School of Visual Arts, New York.

An additional Envisioning the Future $300 stipend for books and materials was awarded to Blythe Maunders, a senior at Monte del Sol Charter School. Also a photographer, Blythe will be attending the University of New Mexico. “I would like my pictures to be a source of inspiration for people to get out of their comfort zones and travel the world,” she said.

Also awarded this year were $1,500 scholarships to past recipients: Rebecca Birken (2010) and Cheyenne Cardell (2011). Bertin-Peterson said, “Since 2007 ARTsmart has donated $40,050 in student scholarships.”

The selection committee included: ARTsmart Board members Bertin-Peterson, Mary Bonney, James Bottorff and Deborah Fritz; Jackie M, director of education & public programs at the O’Keeffe Museum; and Diane Deane, ARTsmart managing director.

Portfolio of Artwork. A minimum of six artwork reproductions, printed on hard copy or digital images on a disk. One example of an actual artwork.

Submissions. Materials should be delivered to Diane Deane, ARTsmart Managing Director, 102 East Water, Santa Fe, NM 87501

December, 2011. Every year ARTsmart sponsors and supplies materials for a variety of children’s projects, many in the Santa Fe Public Schools system. The 15th Annual ARTfeast Santa Fe includes the following projects, which will be for sale throughout ARTfeast weekend events, February 24-26, 2012.

“I Made It!” Plate Winners by SFPS Elementary Students
In October 2011, more than 1,000 elementary students participated in the “I Made It!” Placemat & Plate Project. Inspired by their art teachers, the children created placemats that were judged by an ARTfeast panel. More than one hundred were selected to be fired. Each child created two plates: one to keep and one that is auctioned. The placemats are used at seated events throughout the weekend. The winning plates are in a silent auction at the Saturday evening Gourmet Dinner.

Plate Sets Four plate projects were selected to become sets of 12 unique plates based on creative themes inspired by the art teachers. The sets are auctioned and one is a raffle item.

November 2011. “We couldn’t be more honored that Poteet Victory has agreed to work with ARTsmart in the Santa Fe Public Schools,” says ARTsmart President Martine Bertin-Peterson. “He has been on our short list as Honorary Artist for several years, and it seems fitting that he was available for our seminal 15th annual event.”

Born in 1947 and reared in Oklahoma, Victory was educated in Oklahoma and New York. Since the mid-1990s, he has been a resident of Santa Fe, where he currently shows and maintains a studio at McLarry Modern in the 225 Canyon Road complex. Victory’s colorful paintings are often inspired by Native American culture, including his own heritage which includes Choctaw/Cherokee blood. “The paintings begin with something in the objective world but then I distill and interpret it, drawing upon memory,” he relates. “I’m a very physical painter. I love the materials of art, including stretching and preparing my canvases and applying oil pigments with brushes or palette knives. Layering colors, sanding them back, leaving some areas textured and others smooth or reflective is a tactile experience. I want my paintings to engage all of the viewer’s senses.”

Victory’s project with seniors at Santa Fe High School will explore facets of his current Abbreviated Portrait Series. “The idea occurred to me as I watched people text messaging with abbreviated words and sentences,” he explains. “As I thought about a person, I asked myself what shapes, lines, and colors I saw in my mind’s eye—the triggers, you might say, that would spark a viewer to ‘see’ the person in their minds.” Victory started with Marilyn Monroe and has since done ten portraits of notables such as Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley, Howard Hughes, and Jack Nicholson—abstractions that, according to critics, pioneer a new era of communication that goes to the core of neuroscience and how the brain stores and retrieves information.

Victory will encourage students to create abstracted portraits of people or events. Their paintings will be for sale at the ARTfeast Gourmet Dinner, Saturday, February 25, 2012. Also on the auction block is Victory’s sensational 40×32-inch painting High Desert Earth (cropped, left), the proceeds from which go to ARTsmart, a nonprofit committed to keeping the arts alive in Santa Fe Public Schools.

Fifteen years ago a group of Santa Fe gallery dealers proclaimed that a city known for the fine arts must ensure that its schoolchildren have access to visual arts education. They joined forces to create a nonprofit organization called ARTsmart and a festive Friday night Edible Art Tour, during which donations were solicited to supply art materials for elementary students in the Santa Fe Public Schools. From that modest beginning, ARTfeast Santa Fe has grown into the city’s premier winter celebration with a weekend of fabulous food and art events, the proceeds from which are donated to arts materials, projects, mentors, and scholarships for the youth of Santa Fe.
