Recipient of the 2003 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Grant, Joyce (born 1956) began his career as an award-winning blacksmith, forging architectural accessories. With leftover scrap metal, he began sculpting in the early 1980s, going on to become renowned for large-scale metal sculptures created in collaboration with industrial forges. He lives in the Arroyo Hondo outside Santa Fe and routinely shares his knowledge and skills with aspiring metal smiths through apprenticeship programs and on-site classes for young people.
